Mastopexy (Breast Lift)
The female breast is made up of glandular tissue as well as fat. What gives the breast its youthful shape and support are the ligaments found within the glandular tissue. However, with aging and childbirth, the glandular tissue begins to involute (or shrink) leaving the breast with a higher percentage of fatty tissue and less volume. The ligaments that were once strong and firm begin to lose their attachments, allowing the breast tissue to fall away from the chest wall and the nipple to point downward. The Mastopexy or breast lift procedure was designed to improve the shape of the breast and to reinforce the support of youth. During the standard procedure, minimal breast tissue is removed. The tissue is simply re-arranged, with the nipple and areola being placed into a more natural position. If one of our Jacksonville patients feels that her breasts are slightly too large prior to surgery we can also reduce the breast volume at the time of surgery. However, more patients have lost a significant amount of breast tissue with pregnancy or aging and request a breast enlargement.
