Many women in the Jacksonville area are affected by inverted nipples (or a “shy nipple”), a condition where the nipple does not protrude normally or is “puckered” in on itself. Many women across Florida have asked their general doctors about it only to be told “Dont worry about it”.

Up to 10% of women across the country are affected by inverted nipples or other disorders of nipple shape. This is a topic that is not often discussed in medical literature but can be an aggravating and embarrassing for many women. There are several degrees of inversion with some being permanently inverted while others may be able to be manipulated out only to invert again later.

The biggest issue related to the inverted nipple outside of its cosmetic appearance is the ability to breastfeed. If the nipple is not able to be pulled out, the baby is not able to latch on and breast feed successfully. Unfortunately, traditional procedures to correct nipple inversion have cut the milk ducts that go to the nipple. The good news for our Jacksonville patients is that we use a new duct sparing approach that lets women breast feed postoperatively.
