PLASTIC SURGERY

Nose Surgery (Rhinoplasty)

Rhinoplasty is the alteration of the shape or structure of the nose, and is currently one of the top 5 procedures performed nationally. While cosmetic enhancement is the most common reason for rhinoplasty in Jacksonville, many other patients require surgery to improve their breathing or to reconstruct their nose following an accident.

When people think about rhinoplasty, they often think of a large nose needing massive corrections in shape and volume. However, when dealing with the nose, the most minute alterations are amplified. Most patients we see in our Ponte Vedra office need only a minor adjustment to see significant improvement in the shape of their nose and bring our their facial features.

The nose is made up of mostly cartilage with a small amount of bone at the very top, which you can feel. A large number of Jacksonville patients have issues that only effect the lower half of the nose (or tip) and do not require major alterations of the nasal bones. These issues include surgery to change the shape and size of the nostril, an asymmetry of the tip of the nose, a tip that hangs down too far, etc…

Plastic surgery is very effective for correcting fullness at the top of the nose as well, otherwise known as a dorsal "hump". A small correction in this area can significantly improve the shape of the nose from the side or on profile. Other adjustments such as narrowing a wide nose, straightening a crooked nose or improving contour defects are also common.

Many Jacksonville patients have been born with a deviated septum. The septum is the cartilaginous structure that travels down the middle of the nose and separates the airway into two chambers. A deviated septum means that the septum is curved and blocks the air on one side of the nose. As a result of increased air flow on the open side of the airway, the lining tends to swell, thus blocking airflow on both sides. Patients often have a difficult time breathing at night and frequently complain of having a 'nasal' sounding voice. A deviated septum is very common but easily treated.

The nose is a delicate structure and the mechanics of the airflow represent an even more delicate balance we usually only appreciate when congested. It is vital that a thorough evaluation is performed by a trained plastic surgeon, experienced in numerous rhinoplasty procedures. Often what patients think is a problem with their nose can actually be a weak chin or drooping of the midface when the proper measurements are performed. The appropriate, small improvement in such a critical portion of the face serves to magnify the natural beauty of other facial features such as the eyes and cheekbones.
